back to the php ghetto

I’ve fully realized the depth of stigma against people who say they do php. That reason alone is enough to want to make me move on, never mind that, it is, compared to ruby or python, kind of a clumsy language.

But in the end, who cares? After spending four intense days craming my head full of rails, and realizing even more fully the benefits of a well thought out language, one that values clean nice code, I still do realize that it’s not the end of the world.

I’ve heard statistics say the facebook spends more than 80% of their cpu time on php… this number can be taken a number of ways, but how about this: fb is more stable than, say, twitter, which is built on rails. Proof is in the pudding as they say….

As a final note, I would say that the culture surrounding php is a poor one. After four days of rails I felt like I’d suddenly forgotten php (semi-colons? what do those do??) so I decided it was time to just start hacking on some code. I googled for something like “python challenge” or “ruby quiz” the CS/math puzzles that people publish for challenge and fun. But I didn’t find a single one for php. I think that’s a pretty disheartening thing on many levels. Either people don’t code php for fun, and/or those people who would code for fun, don’t bother to do it in php. *sigh*
